Dan Schafer, DDS

I have been blessed to work in a profession where I can directly influence the lives of others. Dentistry allows me to improve my patients’ health, function and confidence, creating an immediate difference in their health. It also fuses science and art, and every case offers unique challenges that keep me engaged and excited to come to work each day.

I also appreciate that I get to take care of my patients routinely enough to develop a relationship with them, to share with them their joys and hardships. I always take the time to listen to each patient’s needs and treat them as an individual.

I was born and raised in Worthington, MN. I grew up in the dental office, as my mom was a dental hygienist. I always knew I wanted to be in healthcare and enjoyed science, as well as working with my hands, so dentistry seemed a natural choice.

To achieve my goal of becoming a dentist, I attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Art degree in biology with a minor in chemistry. In 2011, I graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry with my Doctorate of Dental Surgery. I began practicing in our Blooming Prairie office in 2011, and in 2015 began practicing at our Mankato location.

An active member of the ADA®MDA, Greater Mankato Growth and American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics, I stay current with new technology and treatments to provide the best possible care for my patients.

My wife Kelsey, is an occupational therapist, and together we have three children. Outside the office I am an avid golfer and enjoy attending Vikings games, traveling to new areas and exploring with my family. I also dabble in a bit of hunting and ice fishing.

My journey to the oral healthcare field began after I graduated from Bethel University with a degree in biology. I worked for a group home doing direct care with the residents and decided I wanted to pursue healthcare during this time. I grew up doing construction with my father and have continued to enjoy woodworking to this day. So, you take an interest in healthcare and combine it with a passion for working with tools and the logical outcome is dentistry! I received my dental degree from the University of Louisville in 2013 and have loved every moment since! I currently work in our Mankato office.

A wise person once told me when I graduated from dental school to “tell the truth and treat people like family,” and that has always stuck with me. I take pride in my work and keep my patients’ best interest in mind. I am blessed and grateful to be in the profession of dentistry.

I live in Mankato with my wife Alecia and our boys Nolan and Eldon. Spending time with my family is my highest priority. We love outdoor activities and I spend a lot of time just trying to keep up with my boys! From woodworking to renovations, I also love to work on projects in the garage and around the house. My other interests include fishing, hunting, biking and gardening.

Dentistry has given me the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people. My patients know that they can trust me and I will be there for them when they need me.

I grew up in New Richland, MN. I completed my undergraduate degree at Gustavus Adolphus College in 1998 and received my dental degree from the University of Minnesota in 2002.

I feel it is important to actively pursue continuing education to provide my patients with the best treatment options available. I attend various continuing education courses and study clubs throughout the year, in addition to volunteering at a local free dental clinic to provide care to those in need.

I find dentistry so rewarding, especially when working with anxious and fearful patients and helping them have a good experience. It is important and uplifting when you can change some of the negative stigmas that can be attached to dentistry.

Here at Main Street Dental Clinics, you won’t be judged and you will find a caring and understanding team ready to help achieve your oral health goals!

I grew up in Saint Anthony Village, Minnesota. I attended undergraduate at St. John’s University and in 2008 graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. I attend meetings and seminars through the American Dental Association® and the Minnesota Dental Association to stay current on the best that dentistry has to offer.

I have called Owatonna home since 2008. My wife Nicole and I have two kids, Ellana and Derek. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family, especially outdoors and on the lake, and watching sports and coaching baseball.

I find “Minnesota Nice” a true statement. Growing up overseas and moving between multiple countries, I truly appreciate the people around me in Minnesota. I experience Minnesota Nice every day with our patients and in return, my focus has always been to make each patient feel at-home when they come to me for treatment.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my daily clinical practice is seeing patients same day to address their emergency needs, taking care of their needs right away, and witnessing the relief we see on their faces. It is one of the most rewarding aspects of my practice.

I graduated from Damascus University in 2002 with my Doctorate of Dental Surgery and Pediatric Dentistry Certificate. In 2003, I attended Tokyo Medical and Dental University for a postgraduate research program. I moved to Minnesota in 2004 and obtained my dental licenses, and have been working with Main Street Dental Clinics ever since.

I work hard to give my patients the attention and expertise they deserve. Continuing education keeps me in touch with the latest technology and treatments methods to reach this goal. I participate in numerous meetings and seminars through the American Dental Association®Minnesota Dental Association and the Zumbro Valley Dental Society.

I have one son, Zain (6 years old), who loves to play with Lego and likes to be called ” The Lego Master ” .

In my free time, I enjoy reading, working on home projects and spending time outdoors with my family.

My path to becoming a dentist started in 2016 after a friend had mentioned the field of dentistry to me. I researched the career and had done some job shadowing at Main Street Dental Clinics while I was applying to dental school. I really enjoy the field of dentistry because it allows me to form great patient relationships while also being able to learn in the field of science and medicine, both of which I enjoy. I have always enjoyed doing activities with my hands, such as DIY projects and sports. Dentistry was the perfect fit for me to be able to use all three of those things: interpersonal relationships, science and hands on work.

I was born and raised in Blooming Prairie and graduated from Blooming Prairie High School in 2014. I continued my education at Winona State University where I received a Bachelor of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology. I attended the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and graduated in May of 2022. My passion and drive for dentistry has allowed me to enjoy continuing to learn and grow as a dental provider to best serve our patients through continuing education courses and staying up to date with new technology and techniques. I am a member of the Minnesota Dental Association and the American Dental Association®.

In my free time I enjoy spending time with my three legged dog, Emmitt. He and I like to play ball together and go for walks around town. I like to go on hiking and camping adventures with my friends, traveling, attending concerts and sporting events and living a healthy lifestyle by being active. Other interests include, cooking/grilling, reading, DIY projects and fixing things, having a good laugh and I am beginning to dip my toe into golfing.

The field of dentistry is constantly evolving and exploring new ways to improve patient care through techniques, materials and technology. I grew up in a small town called Blooming Prairie, MN. I received my Bachelor of Science degree in cell and molecular biology from Winona State University. I am currently a member of the Minnesota Dental Association and the American Dental Association® where I participate in continuing education courses to expand my knowledge as it relates to the field of dentistry and patient care.

Outside of my dental career, you can find me spending time with my family and friends, reading a good book or doing something active. I really enjoy the beauty of nature and I especially love being by the water (lakes, oceans, etc.). I also love playing and watching all sports with my favorites being basketball and volleyball.

From as early as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a dentist. I always enjoyed my visits to the dentist’s office, chatting with my hygienist and dentist and leaving with a big sticker on my shirt. As I grew older and explored the field of dentistry more deeply, I discovered just how rewarding it can be. I’m drawn to both art and science, love connecting with new people and find great satisfaction in helping others with their health and easing any anxieties they might have. Dentistry feels like a perfect fit for me because it combines all the things I’m passionate about, allowing me to feel fulfilled while working closely with my patients to provide the most comfortable and high-quality care possible.

I grew up in Maple Grove, Minnesota, where I played hockey and piano, and graduated from Maple Grove Senior High in 2016. I then went on to the University of Notre Dame, where I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Science-Business. Go Irish! I graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 2024, where I also had the opportunity to work as a tutor and teacher’s aide. I’m committed to staying current with the latest advancements in dentistry to ensure the best care for my patients. That’s why I’m actively involved with the American Dental Association® and the Minnesota Dental Association, taking part in continuing education to keep my skills sharp and my knowledge up-to-date.

When I’m not in the office, you can find me on a pottery wheel, taking my dog Herbert for a walk, enjoying a Wild game or sharing laughs with my partner, family and friends.

In the many years I have practiced dentistry, I have come to treasure the relationships I have made with our patients and staff – relationships built on trust, dignity and without judgement. I always try to treat conservatively, making decisions that will allow our people to keep healthy teeth for a lifetime.

I attended the University of Minnesota-Morris for my undergraduate degree in chemistry and eventually graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry with my Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 2001.

It is my goal to always learn newer and better techniques for surgical and restorative treatment. Also, digital dentistry has advanced so much that we can do things more comfortably and accurately than ever before. I participate in continuing education through the American and Minnesota Dental Associations on all dental topics, and enjoy those related to implant dentistry most of all.

My wife, Janelle, and I live in Byron, MN, with our wonderful children. Family time is most important to me. I am also a sports fanatic who loves football, basketball and baseball as well as playing golf.

I feel the practice of dentistry has given me a purpose to care for people in a way that will outlast my time. My work as a dentist has allowed me to affect patients positively on personal level, enhancing their oral and overall health. I feel privileged to help patients restored to full dental health, and in turn, establishing better overall health. I truly strive to exceed the expectations of my patients every day and in every way possible.

I also really enjoy the kindness and appreciation patients show me. I feel that the kindness we share is returned in full by the patients we serve. I take great satisfaction in seeing patients’ families grow alongside my family over the last 18 years.

I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Minnesota-Morris. I then graduated with my Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis School of Dentistry in 2002.

The practice of dentistry is always evolving and with this evolution, patient care and the actual delivery of dentistry keeps getting better. Continuing education allows me to stay informed as to new developments in dentistry, which I can use to enhance patient care. I attend the annual Minnesota Dental Association meeting to obtain continuing education, also attending evening classes during the year when available.

My memberships include the:

My wife Janel and I have been married for almost 22 years. We have four children ranging in age from 11 to 19, and have loved growing our family in Owatonna. I love spending time with family, whether I’m taking walks with my wife or seeing my kids participate in sports, music and their other activities. I enjoy being outside, especially running, and participate in triathlons as well.

Being part of the community is vital because so much of what happens within our community is done by volunteers who see the value in supporting all those within the community. I volunteer with the Free Clinic of Steele County and personally through our church, NewLife Community in Owatonna on the Production Team.
