5 Foods That Promote Oral Health

Have you ever heard the phrase, “you are what you eat?” Believe it or not – this has some truth to it! Foods that are full of sugar, such as soda and candy, are some of the main contributors to cases of tooth decay. If you follow a diet that isn’t exactly healthy, then one of the first areas that will decline in health is your mouth and teeth.

If you want to improve your oral health, which includes your teeth and gums, then consider adding the foods on this list to your diet.

1. Cheese

If you love cheese, now there’s another reason to eat more of it. According to a recent report, eating cheese can actually raise the pH level in your mouth, thus reducing the risk of tooth decay. It is believed all of the chewing you will do when eating cheese will work to increase the total amount of saliva in your mouth. Cheese is also full of protein, calcium and other nutrients that can help strengthen the enamel on your teeth.

2. Water

By drinking water, particularly fluoridated water, you are helping your overall oral health. This is because the fluoride helps to make your teeth much more resistant to attacking acids, which can result in cavities. In 2012, about 75 percent of the total population in the United States had continual access to fluoridated water, which means if you drink the water that comes out of your sink, you will be doing something great for your oral health.

3. Yogurt

Similar to cheese, yogurt is full of protein and calcium. This makes it a great option for the health and the strength of your teeth. Also, yogurt contains probiotics, which is the “good” bacteria that benefits your gums. This works because the “good” bacteria can crowd out all the “bad” bacteria that results in cavities. If you make the decision to eat yogurt, be sure to choose a plain option that doesn’t have any added sugar.

4. Leafy Greens

There’s no question that leafy greens are an all-around, good-for-you food and something you will find on virtually any healthy food list. They are full of minerals and vitamins and low in calories. Also, options such as spinach and kale help to promote great oral health. They are full of calcium, which helps to build the enamel on the teeth, and they contain folic acid, which is a unique type of vitamin B that offers a wide array of health benefits, which includes the treatment of gum disease in women who are pregnant.

5. Apples

While it is important to stay clear of the majority of sweet foods, there are some exceptions to this rule. One is fruit. While apples are sweet, they are also full of water and fiber. The actual action of eating apples produces more saliva in the mouth, which helps rinse away food particles and bacteria. Also, due to the fibrous texture of this particular fruit, it stimulates the gums.

While eating an apple doesn’t provide the same exact results that brushing your teeth with a quality toothpaste does, it can help you make do until you have a chance to grab your toothbrush. Consider packing apple slices or a whole apple in your lunch to help provide your mouth with a good scrubbing when you finish eating.
